“The more you learn, the more you realize how little you know” -Socrates

Two weeks ago I wrote my blog in response to the song Your Hands -Jj Hellerand it got me thinking about our unanswered prayers. Recently, people have been talking to me and asking for prayers or telling me what they pray about, and I see that they’re praying for all the wrong things. And it made me really focus on what prayer really is and how we should treat it.

First, it’s important to address what prayer is. Now, I don’t want to say that people are praying incorrectly, because praying in itself is an act of communication and that is great. However, sometimes, we pray for the wrong things. We don’t know what God has in store for us. We are humans and imperfect and cannot tell the future. So we may pray for God to keep something in our lives, when in reality, God is taking those things from our lives for a reason, to help us learn. Or we may pray for a certain outcome of an event, but what we don’t know is that that outcome is not what God has in store for us. Especially in times of hurt, we have tunnel vision. We see and want only what we think we need. Our selfish subconscious focuses on our version of the ideal outcome. But, we are human and our brains cannot see that our vision of reality doesn’t match with the perfect vision of God.

This tunnel vision that we have is an issue when it comes to healing because we set ourselves up to be disappointed. When we pray for specific things, and we don’t receive them, we assume that God didn’t feel the need to give us what we wanted, He let us down and we loose faith. That’s why it’s important to learn to find what to pray for, and how to pray. It’s important to learn to adapt a certain mindset in your spiritual life. It’s as simple as praying for strength, or comfort. It’s important to pray for God’s will to be revealed and shown to us so we can go on living and live the way God intended us to.

Prayer is a crucial part in the spiritual journey and should be treated as such. We pray to talk to God, to send praise, and for change in our circumstances. But with good prayer, it doesn’t change just the situation, but the person praying. It requires a lot of strength to step up and pray for the right things. It’s hard to accept that what you want may not happen. But when you pray for God’s will to be fulfilled, it reflects on the faith you have in our Lord.

A prayer without boundaries opens up a huge opportunity for God to work in our open, willing hearts. That’s why it’s important to reevaluate your way of prayer and to have it reflect your life and intention.
